Is a Wi-Fi 6 Router Worth it for a PS5?
If you do decide to use Wi-Fi, look for routers that offer Wi-Fi 6. The PS5 is compatible with this newer generation, and you get access to improved efficiency and faster connections.
Wi-Fi 6 routers can reach speeds of 10 Gbps and up, but this is not a major selling point for the router. Your ISP may not offer a compatible service, and this only affects download speed.
If you have multiple devices connected to your router, Wi-Fi 6 is the way to go. These routers feature MU-MIMO technology that allows the router to communicate with more devices at the same time. The previous generation only supported four devices, and Wi-Fi 6 can chat with eight simultaneously!
Wi-Fi 6 routers offer the greatest security, keeping all your information secure. WPA3 is optional for other standards, but required for Wi-Fi 6 routers.
How to Choose a Router for the PS5
These factors are important when choosing a router for your home, but there are some details specific to a PS5 that you should keep in mind.
Dual Band or Tri-Band
In most cases, a dual band system will handle your connected devices fine. A tri-band system offers you another 5 GHz band to connect devices to, so you need most of your devices compatible with that frequency.
There are also modern options for 6 GHz and upward, but these are not popular yet. A better option is a fully wireless mesh system.
Wireless Protocol
When looking at a router, the letters after “802.11” indicate which protocol the router follows. Look for newer wireless protocols:
- 11ax for Wi-Fi 6
- 11ac for Wi-Fi 5
- 11n for Wi-Fi 4
The newer protocols offer the highest speed and best security options.
Range
A router should offer a range that encompasses the location of your PS5 in your home. Ideally, look for a router that covers as much area of your home as possible.
This may be difficult in larger or longer homes, but you can recruit the use of a Wi-Fi extender. Keep in mind that these impact internet speeds, so you still want your PS5 as close as possible with few obstructions.
Speeds
At the least, make sure the router you choose supports the speeds that you pay for. You might find a good deal and later realize it does not let the speed you pay for shine.
Make sure this number works for all frequencies offered by the router, usually just 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
Consider where the router will sit in your home, and keep in mind that these speeds slow as the service travels through air and solid objects.
Features
Look for a router for your PS5 that offers Quality of Service (QoS). This lets you prioritize certain devices for internet connection, such as lifting your PS5 over a smart TV. This gives you consistent connection even as other devices connect.
MU-MIMO helps distribute the bandwidth appropriately and support higher performance, while beamforming features can direct the signal directly to the device. This offers a more efficient and targeted connection.
Setup/ Connectivity
Make sure you can set up your router in a way that works well for you (i.e. wall mounting). Pay attention to the different frequencies and how easy it is to control your router, (is there an app to help with management?).
Keep in mind that your PS5 will thrive on an Ethernet connection or the 5 GHz band. Either way, it should be as close as possible to the router for optimal speeds.
Is LAN Better than Wi-Fi for a PS5?
When possible, using a LAN connection is better than Wi-Fi for your PS5. Connecting using an Ethernet cable can triple your download speed, (which makes a big difference with game downloads).
You’ll also notice latency cut in half, which is important for the actual gaming performance. A shorter delay helps when gaming, especially with online games.
When using Wi-Fi you need to worry about obstructions. For example, how many other devices are connected, and how far you are from the router.
LAN connections offer a better baseline for your PS5 experience. It may be difficult to create a wiring layout, especially if your PS5 is in another room, but there are ways to achieve connection in these situations.
We hope you found a PS5 router on this list.
